Kothamalli Thogayal / Coriander Leaves Thuvayal


Kothamalli thogayal is a simple dish made using coriander leaves, red chillies, tamarind, mustard seeds and ured dhal. These are first roasted in a teaspoon of oil and ground to a fine and thick paste.

Kothamalli thogayal tastes well with rice and curd rice. This also goes well with idly or dosa.

Ingredients:

  • Coriander Leaves -1 big bunch
  • Oil - 1 tsp.
  • Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp.
  • Ured Dhal – 2 tsps.
  • Red Chillies – 4 or 5
  • Asafoetida – 1/4 tsp.
  • Tamarind – small lime sized
  • Salt – ½ tsp.
  • Water – 1/4 cup


Method:

  • Wash and clean coriander leaves and chop finely.
  • In a pan heat oil and add mustard seeds, ured dhal, red chillies, asafoetida till the dhal turns golden brown.
  • When it cools down grind with coriander leaves, tamarind and salt.
  • Add little water while grinding. Thuvayal should be thick.
  • Serve with rice or idly or dosa.
