Kunukku or Lentil Bonda - A Protein-Packed Snack

Kunukku, also known as Lentil Bonda, is a delicious South Indian snack made with a combination of rice and lentils. Traditionally, it’s a clever way to repurpose leftover Adai batter into crispy, golden bites. This snack is an excellent example of how simple ingredients can be transformed into something truly delightful. My mother often made Kunukku with leftover Adai batter, turning an ordinary evening into a special treat for the whole family.

The beauty of Kunukku lies in its texture and flavor. The lentils add a crunchy exterior when fried, while the soft interior carries the mildly spiced, savory flavors of the batter. For parents, Kunukku is a lifesaver when kids are picky about eating Adai – the same batter served in this fun, bite-sized form becomes an instant hit! Packed with protein from the lentils and carbs from rice, this snack is not only tasty but also nutritious, making it perfect for growing children. Whether served with a cup of tea or as a standalone snack, Kunukku is sure to win hearts. When served with coconut chutney, it tastes delicious.

Ingredients:

  • Adai Batter - 2 cups
  • Onion - 1
  • Green Chillies - 2 or 3
  • Curry Leaves - a handful
  • Salt - ¼ tsp. (as there will be salt already in the adai batter)
  • Rice flour - ½ cup

Method:

  • Chop the onions, green chillies and curry leaves finely.
