Air Fryer Murukku - Crispy Delights with a Twist

Murukku, a beloved Indian snack with its origins deeply rooted in South Indian cuisine, has undergone a modern makeover thanks to the versatile air fryer. In this blog, we'll explore the traditional charm of Murukku, the magic of the air fryer, and a delightful recipe that brings these crispy treats to your table with a healthier twist.

Murukku, a crunchy and spiral-shaped delight, has been a staple during festive seasons, family gatherings, and tea-time sessions for generations. Its unique texture, blend of spices, and the satisfaction of that audible crunch make it a favorite among snack enthusiasts.

Traditionally, Murukku is deep-fried to achieve its signature crispiness. However, with the advent of air fryers, we can now indulge in this classic snack with significantly less oil. The air fryer not only offers a healthier alternative but also simplifies the cooking process, making it accessible to home cooks looking to recreate the magic of Murukku.

Ingredients:

  • Rice flour - 2 cups
  • Urad dal (black gram) flour - 1/4 cup
  • Asafoetida (hing) - 1/2 tsp.
  • Melted ghee or oil - 1 tbsp.
  • Salt - as needed or 1 tsp.
  • Water for mixing the dough
  • Oil for greasing and brushing

Method:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine rice flour, urad dal flour, asafoetida, melted ghee, and salt.
  • Gradually add water and knead the ingredients to form a smooth, pliable dough.
  • Choose the desired Murukku mold and fit it into the Murukku press. I have used star mold.
  • Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (180°C) for about 5 minutes.
  • Lightly grease the air fryer basket.
  • Fill the press with a portion of the dough and shape the Murukku on a greased surface or parchment paper.
  • Carefully transfer the shaped Murukku into the basket, ensuring they are not too crowded.
  • Brush the Murukku with a thin layer of oil for that golden finish.
  • Air fry for 20minutes or until they turn golden brown, flipping halfway through for even cooking.
  • Allow the Air Fryer Murukku to cool before indulging in the crispiness.
  • Store them in an airtight container for a crunchy snack anytime.
